Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped dates
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup ground almonds (almond meal)
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds, for topping

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.

Place the chopped dates in a small bowl and pour over the orange juice. Let them soak while you prepare the batter.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the orange zest.

In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir in the ground almonds.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the soaked dates and orange juice mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top. Sprinkle sliced almonds evenly over the top.

Bake for 55–65 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let the loaf cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use fresh orange juice and orange zest for best results.

  • Avoid overmixing the batter to maintain tenderness.

  • Top with sliced almonds before baking for added texture.

  • This loaf freezes well for up to three months if wrapped properly.

  • Variations like chocolate chips or gluten-free flour can easily be incorporated.
