This French Onion Soup Rice is the ultimate comfort side dish—rich, savory, and packed with deep caramelized onion flavor. Made with just a handful of ingredients, this easy baked rice dish combines beef broth, French onion soup, butter, and uncooked rice to create a no-fuss side that practically makes itself. It’s a perfect companion to grilled meats, roasts, or as a warm, hearty dish all on its own.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup long grain white rice (uncooked)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) French onion soup (condensed)
  • 1 cup beef broth (or water for milder flavor)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, sliced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional for extra flavor)
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss or mozzarella cheese (optional topping)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat oven: Set oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch or similar-sized baking dish.
  • Combine ingredients: In the prepared dish, mix uncooked rice, French onion soup, beef broth, and chopped onion (if using).
  • Top with butter: Place slices of butter evenly over the rice mixture.
  • Bake covered: Cover tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  • Bake uncovered: Remove foil and continue baking for another 25–30 minutes, or until rice is tender and liquid is mostly absorbed.
  • Add cheese (optional): If using, sprinkle shredded cheese on top and return to oven for 5–10 minutes until melted and bubbly.
  • Serve: Let sit for a few minutes before serving. Season with salt and pepper if needed.

Notes

  • Rice Choice: Long-grain white rice works best. Avoid instant rice, which can become mushy during baking.

  • Soup Shortcut: Canned condensed French onion soup keeps prep simple, but you can use homemade soup for added depth.

  • Beef Broth Base: Use a high-quality beef broth or stock to boost the rich umami flavor.

  • Buttery Finish: Dotted butter melts into the rice as it bakes, adding luxurious richness to every bite.

  • Add a Crunch: Top with crispy fried onions during the last 10 minutes of baking for texture and flavor—just like a green bean casserole twist.

  • Cheesy Option: Sprinkle shredded Gruyère, Swiss, or mozzarella over the top before baking or broil at the end for a melty, golden crust.

  • Protein Add-In: Make it a full meal by mixing in shredded rotisserie chicken or browned ground beef before baking.

  • Make-Ahead Tip: Assemble the dish in advance and refrigerate until ready to bake—just add a few extra minutes to the cook time if baking straight from the fridge.
