Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

  • Optional: chopped parsley or green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Stir in the cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook for 2–3 minutes until well combined.
  4. Transfer the beef mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and spread evenly.
  5. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the beef layer.
  6. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer on top.
  7. Bake for 35–40 minutes or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove from oven and sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top. Return to oven for 5 more minutes until cheese is melted.
  9. Let sit for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley or green onions if desired.

Notes

  • Always bake uncovered to achieve the signature crisp topping.

  • Use lean meats or veggie substitutes for a lighter version.

  • Tater tots should be frozen when added to the casserole — never thaw them first.

  • This recipe is ideal for doubling and freezing.

  • Add hidden vegetables like diced carrots or mushrooms to increase nutrition subtly.

  • For extra indulgence, use a cheese blend and garnish with crispy bacon or green onions.
