Ingredients

Scale

For the apple bread:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 apple, peeled and chopped (about 1 cup)

For the cinnamon swirl:

  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

For the glaze (optional):

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 12 tsp milk

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan.

In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon for the swirl and set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Add eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.

In another bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. Gradually add to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.

Gently fold in the chopped apples.

Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture over the batter.

Add the remaining batter on top and sprinkle the rest of the cinnamon sugar over the top.

Use a knife to swirl the cinnamon sugar into the batter gently.

Bake for 50–60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

For the optional glaze, mix powdered sugar with milk until smooth and drizzle over the cooled bread.

Notes

  • Use room temperature ingredients for best mixing and texture.

  • Toss apple chunks in flour before folding them into the batter to prevent sinking.

  • Do not overmix after adding dry ingredients—this can lead to a dense loaf.

  • Cool fully before glazing to prevent the glaze from melting into the bread.

  • For deeper fall flavor, replace milk with apple cider or add a pinch of nutmeg.

  • The bread can be baked a day ahead and still taste fresh. It even improves in flavor overnight.
