  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon cloves
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups unsweetened applesauce
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • ½ cup raisins (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the applesauce, and mix until just combined.
  6. Fold in the chopped nuts and raisins if using.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly.
  8. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Serve as is or dust with powdered sugar for extra sweetness.

Notes

Use homemade applesauce for the freshest flavor—store-bought works too, but make sure it’s unsweetened.
Don’t overmix the batter—stir just until combined for a light, fluffy texture.
Customize it! Add nuts, raisins, or a caramel glaze to enhance the flavor.
Store leftovers properly—keep at room temperature for 2-3 days, refrigerate for up to a week, or freeze for longer storage.
Tastes even better the next day! The spices deepen in flavor over time.

Enjoy this classic Amish dessert that’s simple, delicious, and perfect for any occasion! 🍂🎂
