This Quick One-Pan Cheesy Bubble Up Lasagna combines classic lasagna flavors with the ease of a biscuit casserole. Buttermilk biscuit pieces, savory ground beef, marinara, and three cheeses—ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan—bake into a bubbly, golden dish. It’s a fast, one-pan comfort meal perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) lean ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 (10 oz/285 g) cans refrigerated buttermilk biscuits, quartered
  • 2 cups (480 mL) marinara or tomato pasta sauce
  • 1 cup (240 mL) ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups (200 g) shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • ½ cup (50 g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp dried Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Chopped fresh basil or parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with the chopped onion until the meat is no longer pink and the onion is softened, about 6–8 minutes; drain any excess fat.
  • Add the minced garlic, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes (if using), and a pinch of salt and pepper; sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Stir in the marinara sauce and bring to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat.
  • Preheat your oven to 375 °F (190 °C).
  • In a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking dish, spread half of the biscuit quarters in an even layer. Spoon half of the meat sauce over the biscuits. Dollop half of the ricotta cheese evenly on top, then sprinkle with 1 cup of the mozzarella and half of the Parmesan.
  • Layer the remaining biscuit quarters over the cheese, then top with the remaining meat sauce, ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan.
  • Cover the dish loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 5–7 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden and the cheese is bubbly.
  • Let the lasagna rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh basil or parsley if desired.

Notes

Biscuit Temperature: Keep biscuit dough cold—chill briefly if it softens to help it hold its shape while baking.
Sauce Variations: Try tomato-basil or spicy arrabbiata instead of marinara for a flavor boost.
Cheese Swaps: Add provolone or smoked mozzarella for a richer, bolder taste.
Make-Ahead Tip: Prep in a foil pan, cover, and refrigerate overnight. Bake covered, then uncover to finish browning.
Serving Size: Makes 6–8 servings; scale up ingredients for larger crowds.
Garnish Ideas: Top with fresh basil, chopped parsley, or red pepper flakes for added flavor and color.
