How to Make Kmart Sub Sandwiches at Home with Honey Roast Ham

This Copycat Kmart Sub recipe walks you through each step to build the iconic sandwich from scratch. Using soft sub rolls, layers of deli meats—honey ham, roast beef, chicken ham—and crispy turkey bacon, you’ll master the art of balanced layering. Add Swiss cheese, crisp iceberg lettuce, tomato, red onion, and optional dill pickles for that classic crunch and flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 soft sub rolls (68 inches each)
  • 8 slices chicken ham
  • 8 slices roast beef
  • 8 slices turkey bacon, cooked until crisp
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 leaves iceberg lettuce, washed and patted dry
  • 1 large tomato, thinly sliced
  • ½ small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
  • 4 dill pickle slices (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 °F (175 °C). Place sub rolls on a baking sheet and warm for about 3–5 minutes until just heated through.
  • While rolls warm, cook turkey bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  • Split each warmed sub roll lengthwise, leaving one edge intact to form a hinge.
  • Spread 1 tablespoon mayonnaise and ½ teaspoon mustard inside each roll.
  • Layer 2 slices of chicken ham, 2 slices of roast beef, and 2 slices of crisp turkey bacon in each roll.
  • Top meats with a slice of Swiss cheese, a leaf of lettuce, 2–3 tomato slices, and a few rings of red onion. Add a pickle slice if using.
  • Season vegetables lightly with salt and pepper. Close the rolls gently.
  • Wrap each sandwich in aluminum foil and place back on the baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes, then unwrap and bake an additional 2–3 minutes to melt the cheese.
  • Remove from oven, unwrap fully, slice in half if desired, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Warm sub rolls just until soft—overheating can make the crust tough.

  • Use thin, high-quality deli meats to maintain the right texture and balance.

  • Customize condiments by adding garlic, herbs, or a touch of mustard to your mayo.

  • Wrap sandwiches tightly in foil before baking to lock in heat and moisture.

  • Let subs rest for 1 minute after baking to allow flavors and juices to settle.

  • Store ingredients separately and assemble just before serving to avoid sogginess.
